The Montréal Drum Fest welcomes a drummer who is a living, breathing, sometimes bleeding, embodiment of the musician's dream. It's the dream of everyman, that is if you persevere—sweat, toil, maybe, err, bleed some—you will carve yourself a niche. If you stick at it even longer, harder, and get bruised and, well you know, you will make it big. By that time, you'll be needing a transfusion, but success will be sweet. And it's there for the taking, even available to a band from polite, mild mannered Canada. In the current instance, they've made a big splash in the dark pool of demon metal.

We refer to drummer Moe Carson and his band Protest the Hero. Moe's been with them on a grind from clubs to stadiums, from fledgling demos through three wildly popular albums—and there'll be a fourth, and maybe even another DVD, once the band returns from England. Then it's the Montréal Drum Fest.

Think about it: How often does a Canadian metal band go out and slay the opponents, not just here but in the States and beyond? Everybody knows about this band and about Moe, whose drumset is punk simple but who makes a joyous metal noise.

Moe Carlson is going to give us the boot. Meaning in a good way. The Montréal Drum Fest is pleased to be on the receiving end.
