As a youth in San Francisco, Karl Perazzo harbored a dream to join Santana. Barely in his teens, Karl went pro, working with diverse artists including Cal Tjader, Ray Obeido, Andy Narell, and Prince. In 1991, Karl had garnered a reputation as a rock solid groove percussionist and electrifying soloist. His charisma earned him the coveted spot of timbalero in Santana. Since since he's widened his percussive scope and, in addition, has become an entertainer par excellence.

In fact, Karl can handle just about any drum (or drumset), shaker, toy, or device you put in front of him—a rare talent obvious on his many freelance sessions and solo recordings. Both Karl and running mate Raul share a gilded reputation, one that's earned them the right to have their names engraved on signature instruments.

Nurtured in rhythmic traditions by the likes of Orestes Vilato and Armando Peraza, Raul Rekow gained percussion experience with Aretha Franklin, Patti LaBelle, Herbie Hancock, and cult band Malo before joining Santana in 1976. Raul has been with the band since then and has seen drummers come and go. To each, he's given rhythmic guidance and room in which to flourish. A guardian of time and of space, Raul Rekow knows what it takes to work in diverse ensembles and what he needs to do to get crowds on their feet. What a treat it will be to see Raul and Karl bouncing ideas off each other! The Montréal Drum Fest 2009 is geared up for the triumphant return of Karl Perazzo and Raul Rekow.
